Do Airplane mode and Switching off a phone serve the same purpose?

If you have ever travelled in a flight or even if not, you have surely came across this term "AIRPLANE MODE".
In flights,it is said to the passengers to either put their cell phone in "switched off" mode or in "airplane" mode.

But do the two things serve the same purpose?
 >>The answer is a big "NO".

Firstly, it is important to know why it is being told to put our cell phone in switched off or airplane mode (also called flight mode) while travelling in a flight.
The answer is pretty simple.
When your phone is working, it continuously emits signal to a mobile tower and receives signal from the mobile tower.
So,while in flight, your calls may interfere with the cell towers on the ground and could even interfere with the plane's system resulting in a dangerous situation. The same can happen while using your phone's bluetooth, wifi or GPS.

So, now the question arises what airplane mode does:
Airplane mode only disables the phone's wireless transmissions like wifi, gps, cellular radio, bluetooth. Your phone will stop communicating with cell towers, stop scanning for wifi networks thus resulting in zero radiations.
You can still use a number of apps, games, read books which doesn't require wireless transmission and this is the advantage of airplane mode.
Switching off a phone simply means the phone has stopped all its workings.
Smartphones have an option of wifi while on airplane mode. So in flights which have in-flight wifi facilities, one can use the wifi.

In airplane mode, except wireless transmission, the other functionalities are left untouched.

So, you can see there are a lot of advantages of using airplane mode rather than switching off a cell phone.
